Sion's never-ceasing exploration of the world and of man's existence, founded on his firm and uncompromising principles, gives his work a strongly existential, ethical, and symbolic character possessing a profound urgency. After more than two decades, the public is presented with another retrospective exhibition of an artist who never ceased to express his critical views of each era's norms and requirements in postwar Czechoslovakia. The exhibition will show all the important periods in Sion's artistic career – now-classic works of art, including structural abstraction, imaginative Surrealism and new figuration, as well as contemporary works in which Sion reevaluates the aesthetics of the 1960s. On the occasion of Sion's 80th birthday, a concurrent exhibition in his native Polička (Polička Municipal Museum and Gallery, 3 Feb. – 15 April 2018) will present a unique surviving set of remarkable paintings from his student years.
