Two young Slovak artists, Dávid Demjanovič and Jarmila Mitríková, present a retrospective look at their work from the past two years. Besides the pyrogravure typical for these two artists, the exhibition also includes objects and video. Demjanovič and Mitríková have long focused on themes of folklorism, the history of the Slovak nation, religionism, popular myths and superstitions, which they interpret in a highly individual manner combining – often in bizarre compositions – all these elements with various phenomena of contemporary society, including its phobias, complexes, maladies and unfulfilled expectations. The resulting works are an original mystification of history and the Slovak national character, including its joys and suffering. Absurd visions of the past combine with panoramic scenes of the Slovak landscape (complete with singing young men and girls, communist-era Pioneers, German submarines, satellites, or elements of consumer society such as Coca-Cola bottles) to form an original universe full of irony, but also loving humor.
